Afrika Bambaataa e la sua canzone “Planet Rock”

Mercoledì 9 aprile 2026 è morto all’età di 68 anni Lance Taylor, meglio per non dire esclusivamente noto come Afrika Bambaataa, tra gli indiscussi padri fondatori dell’hip-hop, capace come pochi altri di trasformare la musica in messaggio sociale e renderlo mainstream, anche e soprattutto per essere stato tra i primi a capire come l’elettronica e l’hip hop potessero capirsi e accompagnarsi e unire il mondo attraverso il ritmo. Tante le sue canzoni diventate autentici inni: “Planet Rock”, “Renegades Funk”, “Looking for the Perfect Beat”, così come “Reckless” insieme agli UB40 e “Unity” con James Brown furono anche autentiche hit planetarie. “Planet Rock” è la canzone che abbiamo scelto per commemorare Afrika Bambaataa come si deve.

L’eredità di Afrika Bambaataa

Parlare dell’eredità di Afrika Bambaataa significa raccontare un momento in cui tutto cambia direzione. All’inizio degli anni Ottanta, l’hip hop è ancora profondamente radicato nel funk, nel groove dei vinili e nella tradizione afroamericana. “Planet Rock” rompe questo equilibrio e introduce un elemento estraneo, quasi alieno: sintetizzatori, drum machine, strutture elettroniche ispirate alla musica europea, in particolare all’estetica dei Kraftwerk. Il risultato è rivoluzionario, tendente al futuro senza rinnegare il passato: Afrika Bambaataa lascia un’eredità culturale e sociale che va ben oltre la musica, il tutto reso meno lineare alle accuse di abusi sui minori che poi ne hanno inficiato la rispettabilità.

Il significato di Planet Rock

“Planet Rock” – uscita nel 1982 con il feature di The Soulsonic Forces – non segue le regole tradizionali della scrittura musicale. Non c’è una storia da seguire, non ci sono personaggi né uno sviluppo narrativo. Il testo è costruito come un flusso continuo, fatto di richiami, ripetizioni, slogan ritmici che funzionano più come strumenti sonori che come veicolo di significato. L’iconico incipit, “Party people” è l’esempio perfetto di questa dinamica. Non introduce un tema, non racconta nulla: chiama. È una formula di attivazione, un segnale che trasforma l’ascolto in partecipazione. Ed è proprio in questa capacità di creare connessione immediata che si trova il vero significato di “Planet Rock”.
